Common questions
Why is there a preparation deposit?
Preparation is project-specific work: we analyze your PDF, confirm what should count, and calculate an exact index quote. The deposit covers that work if you stop there. Continue with an index, and we apply it toward your purchase. This means preparation is not an added fee.
Why is there a 50¢ preparation minimum?
Stripe’s minimum charge for a US-dollar transaction is 50¢, so that is the smallest deposit we can process. At 5¢ per page, it only affects projects under 10 pages.
What is a prepared token?
We first remove material that should not be indexed, including excluded front matter, headers, footers, and proofing elements. We then run the remaining prepared text through the tokenizer used for pricing. This produces an exact count of indexable text, so you are not charged for ignored material.
How do I estimate token density?
Use 744 tokens per page as a practical starting point. Prepared books in our current sample range from about 500 to 1,000.
Is this a subscription?
No.
Can I add another index later?
Yes, you can add another index from the same prepared source without making another deposit or rerunning preparation.
